Making a first dental visit feel safe, and how to keep young teeth cavity free at home.

A child's first dental visit sets the tone for how they'll feel about dental care for the rest of their life. We keep early visits short, friendly and low-pressure — often just a quick look, a ride in the chair and a chance to meet our team before any real treatment happens.

At home, the habits that matter most are consistency and supervision. Children need help brushing thoroughly until around age seven or eight, and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is plenty for most kids. Limiting sugary drinks and snacking between meals does more to prevent cavities than almost anything else.

We recommend starting checkups around a child's first birthday or first tooth, whichever comes first, and continuing every six months after that. Regular early visits catch small issues before they become big, more stressful ones.
