After Your Visit
Recovering from an extraction or implant: what to eat, what to avoid and when to call us.
The first 24 to 48 hours after an extraction or implant placement are the most important for healing. Stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies and mashed potatoes, and avoid anything hot, spicy or crunchy that could irritate the site or dislodge a healing clot.
Avoid using a straw, smoking or rinsing forcefully for at least the first few days — the suction and pressure can disturb the blood clot that protects the healing socket and lead to a painful condition called dry socket. Gentle salt-water rinses after the first 24 hours can help keep the area clean.
Some swelling and mild discomfort is normal and typically peaks around day two before improving. If you experience fever, worsening pain after the third day, or unusual bleeding, call our office right away so we can check on you — don't wait for your follow-up appointment.
